What does Edmunds.com Say?

“Unless you really need the Excursion's towing ability and huge interior, you're better off with the smaller Expedition or GM's Suburban/Yukon XL twins.”

The Pros and Cons from Edmunds.com

Pros
Substantial passenger and cargo capacity, impressive towing ability, diesel engine option.

Cons
Unwieldy size, trucklike driving characteristics, poor fuel economy, high sticker price.

Safety

The Excursion doesn’t have any proven crash test results because it is yet to be tested by NHTSA or IIHS. The Excursion comes standard with four-wheel antilock disc brakes. Optional safety equipment includes power-adjustable foot pedals and a reverse-sensing system, which, for such a large vehicle, is strongly recommended. The extra-large Excursion takes the safety of smaller vehicles into consideration with its patented BlockerBeam™. In the event of a frontal collision, the BlockerBeam™ helps prevent smaller vehicles from sliding under the front end of the larger Excursion.

Ford Excursion

The four-door Excursion has been freshened for the 2005 model year. The vehicle offers eight- or nine-passenger seating with either two- or four-wheel drive. The selling point for the Excursion is definitely its cargo room: fold down the seats for a cavernous cargo area with over 146cu. ft. of space. The 2X4 models come with a 5.4-liter SEFI Triton V8 engine, which produces 255 horsepower. The 4X4 models come with a 6.8L Triton V10, which pumps out 310 horsepower. For all models you’ll have an option to go diesel, in either 4X2 or 4X4, with the 6.8L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel, which pumps out 325 horsepower. It is important to check out all of the available towing options for the excursion: fully equipped, the vehicle can tow trailers weighing up to 11,000 lbs. The Excursion comes in four trims: XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited.

XLS – The XLS comes standard with a rear air conditioner, cruise, ABS and a front bench seat that gives the vehicle nine-person seating capacity.

XLT – Adds power rear-quarter windows, rear audio controls, automatic headlights, a trip computer and front captain's chairs. Optional DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system is available, which includes a 7” flip-down color screen and audio/video inputs.

Eddie Bauer – Includes special trim, foglights, turn signal sideview mirrors, automatic climate control and power-adjustable pedals. Optional DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system is available, which includes a 7” flip-down color screen and audio/video inputs. Second-row captain's chairs are also available.

Limited – The Limited adds body-color trim, a premium audio system (6 CD, 80 watts), a reversible cargo mat and heated front seats. Optional DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system is available, which includes a 7” flip-down color screen and audio/video inputs. Second-row captain's chairs are also available.
