Maine is the northernmost state in the region known as New England and the easternmost state in the country. It borders New Hampshire on the west, and is the only state that borders exactly one other state. The temperature is generally chilly, with moderately warm summers, but few, if any, hot days. Maine is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River. It is nicknamed the “Pine Tree State” since 90% of its land is forest. Maine is equally well known for its breath-taking ocean scenery. Along the famous coast of Maine are lighthouses, sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages and thousands of offshore islands. Jagged rocks and cliffs and thousands of bays and inlets add to the unique, rugged beauty of Maine's coast. Juxtaposed to the coast, inland Maine offers views of lakes, rivers, green forests and towering mountains.
